February - Optional Winter Campout Feb. 11-12th

Join us for our Indian Guides and Trailblazers Winter campout February 11^th & 12^th at Camp Christopher. Check-in is Saturday at noon. Camp will provide overnight cabin accommodations and access to the heated Rec Hall. Tribes will need to bring firewood and their own food. Cost is $20 for a father and first son, $5 for each additional little brave. Please have headcount and money to your Chief by January 27th. We will be able to accommodate additional braves after January 27th, but we won’t be able to guarantee the same rate as those that register/pay in advance. Any questions please contact Dave Beitko.

Mark Saturday February 4th for our annual Father & Son Car Derby. The races are held at Camp YNoah and run as in years past. Registration is the night before from 6 to 8:00 pm, and races by age group are Saturday morning between 9 am and noon. Be sure to talk to your chiefs to get your car kits ($6 each) and see the end of this Smoke for further details.

2012 Manikiki Nation Father and Son Car (FASCAR) Derby

Location: Camp YNoah Dining Hall

Race date: Friday and Saturday, February 3rd & 4th, 2012.

Races will start promptly by age group as follows:

• Ages 5-7: 9:00 - 10:00 am

• Ages 8-9: 10:15 - 11:15 am

• Ages 10-12: 11:30 - 12:30 pm

Registration: Friday evening, February 3rd, at the race location, from 6:00 - 8:00 pm.

Note: All cars must be registered on Friday; there will be NO registration of cars the morning of the race!

Car Specifications:

• Maximum width: 4.5 inches at the widest point, including the axles.

• Maximum weight: 16 ounces (one pound). There is no minimum weight.

• Maximum height: 6¾ inches. This is important so that your car will fit under the timing gate!

• Maximum length: There is no minimum or maximum, however the distance between the two axles cannot be changed.

Guidelines and Rules:

• Any material is allowed in construction of cars. Any lubrication, in any amount, is allowed before registration, however no car modifications or lubrications are allowed after registration or between heats!

• No mechanical devices may be used to speed up the cars: springs, magnets, moving weights, etc.

• Cars must run on the 4 wheels and 2 axles provided in the kit. Axles must be stationary, but their width can be shortened if desired. Metal washers, cotter pins, etc, can be used to replace the red washers/caps provided in the kit.

• At registration, car weight and other dimensions will be verified. If a brave cannot make it to YNoah to register his car, another member of his tribe, or a family member, can register it for him. The track will be set up for trial runs Friday evening, and you may bring basic tools and weights for minor adjustments on-site.

• Races are run by age group and each little brave is guaranteed at least two races. If possible, braves will not race their first heat against other little braves in their own tribe. Please note that alumni braves are not allowed to race; since awards are given out this event it is for current Manikiki Nation little-braves only.

• Races will be started by the nose of the car. No portion of the car may extend beyond the starting gate when the car is placed on the track for racing (i.e no wrap-around or over-the-top fronts).

• We will use an electronic finishing gate to determine the winner of each heat. Track problems of any kind will result in a ‘dead heat’ and the cars will be run again, but otherwise the decision of the electronic gate is final!

• Trophies will be awarded for the 3 fastest cars in each age group. Design trophies will be awarded for the 2 best designed and/or decorated cars, in each age group, in each of two different categories: Indian Theme and Open Theme. Note that a car may win for both decoration and speed!

• The sponsoring tribe chiefs will pre-select up to 5 of the best cars in each decoration theme. Prior to the race all participating fathers and sons will vote on these cars by dropping a piece of candy in a bag. The 2 cars with the most candy, in each theme, will win the trophies; but all 5 finalists will get the candy in their bags.

• Please be sure that any decorative trappings do not fall off the car during the race or in any way interfere with the other cars in the heat. Also, please do not over-lubricate such that graphite or fluids drip onto the track.

• Please be on time and ready to race when your age group is scheduled. As in years past, a little brave need not be present to race his car. His father, chief, or another little brave from his tribe can place the car on the track when called to race. All little braves that register a car, and their fathers, will be given participation credit for the event.

• This is intended to be a ‘fun’ event for the boys and fathers, and everyone’s patience and sportsmanship is appreciated. Fathers be sure to help your sons with all aspects of building and decorating your car; this is a father AND son event and the truly important part of it is the time you spend with your son before the race working together on your car!

The Green Memorial Day Parade starts at 10AM from the Green High School Parking lot,so try to be there at least a half an hour before then. Entry to the parade staging area is best from Boetler Rd.

Remember this is a makeup event for any Brave that may have missed another event during the year. We'll be tossing candy and handing out flyers along the parade route.

Wear your feathers and vests. We always have fun and it doesn't take much time away from that weekend grilling!

Canton Cougars Arena Football - March 21

Where: Canton Civic Center

When: Monday, March 21st at 7:30 p.m.

Cost: $5 per ticket

Canton Cougars are part of the Ultimate Indoor Football League, UIFL. There are six teams in the league. The Cougars just finalized their roster and are ready for another exciting season.

This should be an exciting event for us. Most have never been to an arena football game, and this will be a great opportunity to give it a try.

Also, the nation will be able to go down on the field after the game for meeting the players and autographs. The boys can play catch on the field as well.

TRAILBLAZERS - PAINT BALL Saturday Nov/6th

Trailblazers is relatively new to the Manikikki Nation. Over the last few years we have had a number of events like Laser Tag, chartered Lake Erie fishing trip/camping, snow tubing, and we even spent a weekend at the Write Patterson Airforce Museum in Dayton. Our next event is Paintball at Clays Park south of Canal Fulton on Saturday November 6th. If you are a current Indian Guides Member you are more than welcome to attend. If you are a past member I ask that you let me know that you are a past member and you are interested in joining Trailblazers. There will not be an annual dues this year for Trailblazers membership, however, to be a member in 2011 we will ask that you pay a $20 fee that will go to the Y. We are currently working out the details of the real definition of Trailblazers so it can be written into the constitution. If anyone out there has had experiences with other Trailblazers programs, or just has suggestions, please let me know.

DETAILS ABOUT THE EVENT:

We will meet at “SPLAT” inside Clays Park at Noon on November 6th. There will be two packages available:

ALL equipment is provided for the above rate. You are allowed to bring your own equipment, however there is no discount. For liability reasons you are NOT allowed to bring your own paitballs. You can purchase extra balls from Splat.

Many of the older braves made the trip to Dayton Ohio to visit the United States Air Force's National Museum located on Wright Patterson Air Force Base. The event was an over night event with a pizza and pool party held on Saturday night.

What a great weekend!!!! The weather could not have been nicer, nice sunny mid 70's during the day and upper 50's at night. Perfect for a campout on the river mohican.

With about 170 of us, the turnout was very good this year. We stayed at the Mohican Reservation near Loudonville. It was so nice, a campout with 9 mile canoe ride, pig roast, nation games and a fire ceronomy under the milky way. If you missed it - you really did miss it.

HEAD COUNT: We need a head count at the August Longhouse meeting. Deadline for money is August 28. One check per tribe.

CAMPGROUND: This year we will have the entire area. We will move to the riverfront side with bigger sites that can handle RV/popups and large tents. All sites have power and water. Also better restroom facilities and a pavilion with grills, picnic tables, etc. We will have ball fields and a playground close by. Campsites will be assigned, so put in a request if you want to be close to a companion tribe.

PRICE: $75.00 per family
CANOEING: This year we will be doing a 9 mile canoe trip, lasting approximately 2 hours. We will be bused upstream and finish at the campground. We will do this canoe trip as a Nation on Saturday afternoon. A fun pass will be available that includes a canoe ride plus go karts and putt putt golf. This will not be part of the Nation schedule, but could be a good Sunday activity.
NATION GAMES: We would like to do Nation games/contests on Saturday morning. Ideas include: Tug of war, Sponge dodgeball, Capture the Lance, etc. Additional ideas are welcome.

MEALS: Like last time, the Nation will be providing dinner Saturday night. It will be a pig roast done by Bob “Big Bear” Mahaney. He will need until 6:00 to finish the pig. Campers are responsible for breakfast on Saturday and Sunday, SATURDAY lunch will be provided by the Nation. Some tribes have done a group breakfast in the past and this can be a lot of fun and a good bonding experience. There are restaurants in the area including McDonald’s.

BEAN CONTEST: We will once again have our annual bean contest on Friday evening. One entry per tribe. We will have electricity in the pavilion.

NIGHT HIKE: Kevin Adkins has once again offered to lead our night hike on Friday night after the bean contest.

Relay for Life This weekend - Please Help

Relay for Life

The Tribe has a fair number of members that are or have family that are cancer survivers. That is why we choose to support this worthy activity. Community Service Project Friday June 19th , Green High School Stadium. We have always represented very well and I don’t expect any different this year. If you can come out and help us set-up/take down, work the booth, walk around the track for awhile or just come to try the tastywings we will be selling, it is well worth it. This Nation Service Project is a great way to spend an evening with your son. If you have never been, please consider coming out. You won’t regret it!

PLEASE HELP OUT!!

Volunteers are needed to help set up The Manikiki Nation booth, sell food and tear down the booth at the Relay for Life this weekend! Booth set up will start at 1:00pm Friday afternoon. And then at 5:00 we Start selling wings, water and popcorn.

Booth tear down will be at 12 noon on Saturday.The event runs all night long, but we will be there until we sell our 500 wings!!

Any Nation members that participate will receive a special bead and credit for a make up event. You don't need to ask or tell anybody - just show up at the event.

Memorial Day Parade

The tribe walked the annual Green Memorial Day Parade again this year. I think 1/2 of the city of Green is in the parade and the rest come to watch. The kids have a blast - just being in a parade and able to throw candy out is a huge hit among the little braves.

Y-Noah Spring Campout 2009

What a great weekend at Camp Y-Noah!!

I’ve put up a wide Varity of pictures from the campout. I also included some quick videos one of the fire and the kids horsing around in a barrell. I embedded the videos in with the pictures, but also they should so up in youtube (as well as on this blog in the bottom right)

While we had a little bit of rain – Mother Nature did spare us and in fact it turned out to be a good weather weekend. The rain was hard but came in very brief moments.

The nation games were fun. Each tribe blindfolded a little brave and then had him run and find various articles. The challenge is that you had to use animal noises to guide the brave. Oink = for straight, woof for left, meow for right and Moo for down. It was a great sight seeing the boys make all that noise. Congrats to the Cherokee tribe who avoided a lot of penalty seconds and won the event by over 30secs. The landing picture this week is the Cherokee braves.

The fishing derby was my personal highlight of the weekend.

Tribe campfires burned bright each night. The fire ceremony had the highest flames in recent memory, I good way for us to break in the new fire bit built by our nation.

Late Nighter was really fun

We had about 130 of us for the late night at the Y. This year we had pizza, popcorn, texas sized marshmellows and a whole lot of fun.

Dodgeball was a big hit (get it 'hit') with the kids using those foam balls that don't hurt (that much). AS well as swimming and releays. I think we had over 100 in the pool area at the sime time.

The movie in the racketball court worked out great - the kids seems to like the veggietales as well as the new movie "BOLT".

Basketball was popular, as well as we had two corn hole bean bag sets going. Those cornhole sets were made by Tom - and they were great sets (see his commemt below if you want to order a set)

For those of you that missed this event, you did miss out on some simple easy to understand fun between father and sons. Remember as a father you really only have a few more years to made a difference in your kids life - are you doing a good job?

Free Event! The Green YMCA opens late just for us. Bring your swimming trunks and your gym shoes for Open gym, swimming, dodge ball, snacks and a little friendly competition.

This year we are NOT sleeping over but leaving by 5:00am. Many come for just a few hours, eat some Pizza and play a few games then get home at a respectible hour. Some choose to stay into the wee hours of the morning.

There will be food, drinks, movie, games etc. Plan on stopping by for just a little bit - it's a great time

Trailblazers Event

LaserQuest April 3rd from 10pm to midnight

Open to all dads/sons with boys over 10.

We have two sessions...11pm and 11:30pm. Cost per person is $10 per person (actual cost $12 per person, with the nation picking up the extra $2) per sesson. Right now, we have 40 sign ups...can take 34 per session, so have spots open for 18 more people. Although the deadline was Thursday, March 20, with extended group size, we can take 18 more people. We are playing the Iron Man Challenge, a 30 minute extreme laser quest session (normal sessions run 8-10 minutes max)

Bowling - Sun March 15th.

Don't Forget Bowling Sunday March 15th from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Akron Lanes on Rt. 224 just east of Canton Rd (Rt. 19) in Springfield Township.

Each brave (big and little) will bowl one game individually and one as a father/son team. Everyone will get a coupon for their own 16 oz pop. Food is not included. If you would like to buy pizza ($10 for a one topping pizza) for your tribe please let me know, one week in advance, so they can thaw enough crusts. All other concessions will be available for purchase on a first come first served basis. There will be prizes drawn randomly for the little braves throughout the event.

FASCAR - Results!!!

What a good time - eh? Many thanks to Tom and the rest of the Comanche for sponsering and running today's fascar event. I think all went very well. You guys just seem to have the system down and run this event like a well oiled machine.

We took a lot of photos - many of which have captions, so be sure to scan thru them. Also feel free to put in some captions/words of your own.

As far as tips/tricks I talked with a lot of the winners this year. No real secrets on building a car. Most this year used graphite based lube (i.e pinewood derby dry lube) last year the big winners mostly used 3-1 oil or WD40 (that was Kurt). Some of the cars had the dad do a lot of work, but some of the fastest carst had no work other than adding weight and wheels.

I found another blog site of a Y-group in texas and some guy put up his tips. This guide groups runs with 24oz on their cars so some things are different - but this guy does have some interesting tips:

FASTCAR - This SATURDAY!!!

HERE ARE THE CORRECT TIMES FOR this weekends FASTCAR Derby

Location: Camp YNoah Dining Hall

Race date: Saturday, February 7th

Times: Races will start promptly by age group as follows:

Ages 5-7: 9:00 - 10:30 am
Ages 8-9: 10:30 - 12:00 pm
Ages 10-12: 12:00-1:00 pm

REMEMBER YOU MUST CHECK YOUR CAR IN ON FRIDAY NIGHT (from 6-8pm). Every year there is always some poor little brave who did not check their car in and just shows up at the race. Wewill NOT let them race. It would be unfair to the rest of the tribe. There are reasons for the nightbefore checkin. Remember Anybody can check a car little brave not required to be there.

Also - for those that go to the web site (there is 3 perhaps 4 people) - the hosting service AGAIN will not let me update the site. I'm sorry but the smoke and monthly updates did not happen. I've just spent the better part of a Sunday afternoon fighting with that web hosting and that site. An afternoon that I am sitting inside while my kids are outside playing WITHOUT me. Anybody have issues if I shut the site down? Anybody use it? I'm more than frustrated today about that web site.

Don't forget sell raffle tickets, and let your chief know if you will be staying over for the campout Sat night

CAMPING - Primitive or a Y-CAMP?

Here is an image from a primitive' campout. That guy on the right is our nation chief enjoying a morning cup of joe.

The spring campout this year is May 15-16 at Camp Y-Noah in Green. That has already been booked. We are now trying to figure out where to go for the fall campout. The big question is do we go to another Y-Camp -like Christopher, Fitch /Tippecanoe or do we go to a primitive campout like on the river in Mohegan.

It's been since 2005 since our last non YMCA campground campout when we went Mohegan. This fall we have the option of staying at normal YMCA owned campgrounds like Christopher/Fitch or going to a private campground like we did in 2005.

If we pick a private campground we will make sure the campgrounds has the facalities to hold us and with a large firepit for our ceromony. Many of these type of places also offer canoe, put-put, go cart racing etc. It's drasticly different than a Y-camp as there is no kitchen, everbody cooks for themselfs and you need to bring your own sleeping arragements (i.e. Tents or RV's)

What is the reverse raffle event?

That Picture has nothing to do with this post - but it was taken in the winter when we hold the raffle - so like it's cold and you need somthing to do during the winter right? Go to the raffle.

What is the reverse raffle event?

To start off it is a charity event that the tribe makes all its yearly operating funds. We don’t sell cookies or do car washes – just this one event and it’s actually a heck of a lot of fun.

It’s held in one of the party rooms of Guy’s Party center in Akron on waterloo road.. Most everybody in the area has been to a funeral I mean wedding reception at Guy’s. The ticket is $55/each but that gets you a lot and is really a value. Guy’s puts on a pretty good buffet meal with roast beast, chicken, potatoes/sausage, rigatoni, veggies, etc. They start you off with table service of salad and appetizers, then you hit the buffet, roast beast carving station, and after that table service with some type of desert. The food at Guy’s is generally above average for buffet and the selection is good. Also include is a full open bar, including beer (both bottled and draft), wine AND mixed drinks. Be careful they poor a good drink at Guy’s and if you want to drink be sure you have a non drinking driver.

Entertainment and dancing: Scott Summers (outstanding service award winner) sometimes brings his band or he sets up his DJ Stand. He does this professionally and is the local rep for Roland music so he has top notch equipment. Karaoke is sometimes on the program, and there is a dance floor. Scott can keep the crowd on the floor and knows how to work a room with music. Not too loud, not too soft and the right genre for the crowd.

There is a silent auction: Many of the tribes bring items, as well as we solicit local business to donate. If any of your tribe members owns a local business or works for local business please ask for a donation. Restaurants often give meals, auto places give car washes -even large corporations can donate.

IMPORTANT: Everybody should ask their employer to give a contribution. Even big corporations such as Goodyear and Microsoft have provided donations in the past.
The key is we as tribe members just need to ask. Also individual tribe members can put forth items. These donations are tax deductible.

The way the auction works is that throughout the first part of the night you can walk around and ‘bid’ on items that interest you. Generally the price value of the items range from $20 to $80. It’s called silent as you write in your bid on the auction sheet, up until the time the auction closes. Bidding on items is purely optional. If you win something its best to pay with a check/cash , yes we can take credit cards but it’s a pain.

SIDE GAMES: These are mini-game events. One or two mini-game poker type tables will be running. There a dealer gets five people together and does quick poker type games for prizes. Generally you pay $1 or $2 for each hand and the prizes change based on what we have to offer. There are also various raffle tickets being sold for various items as well as a 50/50 drawing where the winner gets 50% of the collection.

MAIN RAFFLE: The main raffle is a raffle but backwards. Your entry ticket has a number on it from 1 to 300. At the start of the main event we start pulling numbers and the idea is to NOT get drawn. Last number in the barrel wins. In addition, tickets drawn at various points also receive cash prizes. This prize points and amounts are shown on the program. The winner of one of these interim checkpoint prizes has an option of keeping the cash or having their number put back in the barrel.

As the numbers are drawn Vanna White will be there to mark off the numbers already drawn on a big numbers board, so if you miss something you can easily catch up.

Related to the main raffle is the “side boards”. The local lingo is “main board” for the main event raffle and side boards are side bets. We start selling side boards at the start of the evening. There are usually two side boards all having numbers from 1 thru 300, and we don’t start until we sell them all. Each side board sets up its own pool of money and the winners of the side boards win from that separate pool. A lot of people like to buy a side board or two as it increases their odds of winning. Side board numbers sell for $5, but we can change that amount based on attendance. Don’t quote me but I think the winner of a $5 side board gets $750. Side board number are a very popular prize at the poker table.

We also run bingo during the raffle. Walking around will be people selling bingo cards. As the numbers from the main raffle are called you fill up your bingo card. First person with a full card yells bingo and wins the bingo money. Bingo payout is determined by how many bingo cards were sold.

There is also the 11th number raffle. This is the most confusing thing for newbies. Earlier in the night will be somebody selling 11th number raffles. The winner of this raffle gets a very special main event ticket number 11. Number ll ticket only gets put into the drawing when there are 10 tickets left in the main board drawing. That means the holder of ticket 11 stands a 1 in 11 chance of winning first prize.

When it gets down to this final 11 the remaining ticket holders are called up. As it gets down to the final 5 the group has an option of splitting the money right there or go for it all individually.

One minor thing to note is that on your actual ticket there is a number as well as a stub for you to write in your name / phone number. The stub with your name is what gets turned in. You keep the big side of ticket and show it at the door for entry. Your tribe chief needs all stubs and money before the event. We put the stub with your name in a small bottle and that goes in the main event drawing barrel. We also try to print up a list so everybody knows everybody’s number as it is fun to heckle people as they are drawn. The number list only shows tickets sold prior to the printing of the list. Leftover main event tickets just for the drawing will be sold at the event I think they go for $25. We will be sure we have all numbers 1-300 sold before starting the raffle. Leftover main board are also a popular prize at the poker table.

Perhaps this is more detail than you need to know. It’s actually very easy once your there and flows well.

For $55 you get food, drinks, entertainment and an entry into the main raffle event. Everything else is optional,(but do please tip the bartenders.) All and all its actually a pretty good deal if you think about it. More important it is a really fun way to raise money for the tribe.

Look for me dealing at the poker tables. The event is Sat March 7th - 6:00pm

Joe Friday Night

One of the traditions we have been holding is to have a “Joe Friday” Indian Guide Alumni night. It’s where the current council and chiefs invite past winners of the Joe Friday award and meet up at Legends for a reunion. We share past and current stores, learn from each other and of course just have a good time.

It is a great experience to hear stores of the tribe from the recent history as well as events from as far back as the 1970s.

This year we had 10 nation chiefs, and a good mix of alumni.

Take a look at the slide show. I also took a few pics from the “Longhouse” meeting earlier that night. We hold the longhouse once a month at the Green YMCA.

One thing of note. At the longhouse the big topic we talking about if it was the pro/cons of holding the father/son banquet at Y-Noah vs Guys party center where we have held it the past few years (FYI - did you know that Rocky owner of Guy's was in the nation and part of the Cherokee during the late 1990s - early 2000's?)

We estimate that saved $1000-$1400 by holding the event at Y-Noah, but there were others pros/cons to Y-Noah vs. Guys.

Actualy if anybody ever has pics they want to share then upload them to me via "PICASA". http://picasa.google.com/ It's free, download the software (it has great simple edit tools for redeye and lighting) upload your pics to your album, make sure the album is set to public viewing and then just send me an email with the link. You will need a google gmail account - but that's also free. I will then add your pics into this blog posting.

2008 Father-Son Awards Ceremony

Greetings Manikiki Nation. We just finished up the 2008 Father-Son Awards Ceremony. Here is Singing Moose – Scott Summers receiving our highest honor – the “Outstanding Service Award”. Scott has done so much for the nation in his six+ years with the tribe. It is going to be hard to imagine the nation without him. Scott – the award was well deserved – and thank you for all the extra effort you put into everything.

This year we held the event at Y-Noah as opposed to Guys Party Center. Our relationship with Y-Noah has been growing ever closer these past few years and holding the venue at Y-Noah saved the tribe a few thousand. Many thanks go out to Jim Cross in helping organizing and Jim Fuller for catering. Also many thanks to Y-Noah staff.

I’m sorry I had to leave before the entertainment – as my 8 year old really wanted to get to our deer blind before sundown. Somebody email me pics (jpwiggo@yahoo.com) and I can post.

We are having some minor tech difficult ties updating the web site – it has not been updated in a few months and we are working out the bugs. Sorry for the delay. I will however post important information about events here in this blog as well as you will get them via email

The Annual Fundraiser is Sat March 7th. Be sure to start selling tickets now – line up your family, friends and IG Alumni to this event. Lock them up verbally this holiday season. I generally get my guests locked up during holiday parties when they are full of Christmas “cheer” and full of merry fluid.

Welcome to the Blog Site of Green YMCA Indian Guides

We welcome all guides both little and big from our nation to join the blog and become a "Follower". The Blog is a way to interact more as a tribe. Followers can post comments and give feedback. Give the nation your ideas and share your images and experiences. What makes a blog work is that it's an interactive site.

As the web spinner - I will also update the nation images and post on a regular basis. The official web site will still contain the monthly smokes and official business. This blog is more of our play site to interact with one and other.

I will make a blog posts when new web content is available and directly link to it. This will be a good way to push the smoke and monthly event information to the tribe

If you subscribe to this blog then you will automatically receive new content. What does subscribing mean? In simplest terms you can add this blog to your homepage. For example if you use a Yahoo or Goggle type homepage, then this blog will show up as content. As the content on this blog changes - it will change on your homepage - like when news stories update.

In the meantime - here is a great video about Indian Guides and why we exist. This video is from the Timucan Federation in Jacksonville, FL. Although they went the "Adventure Guide" route - they still seem to hold the respect for the indian ways. It is a great video.
